This year, we are delighted to bring an exhibition that explores the role of maps in the creation of fictional worlds. Named after a quotation from J.R.R. Tolkien, the exhibition “I wisely started with a map!”traces over 2,700 years of fictitious cartography, featuring maps of much-beloved lands like Middle-Earth, Lilliput, and Oz.

Melbourne Rare Book Fair
Daniel Crouch Rare Books is very excited to be exhibiting at the Melbourne Rare Book Fair for the first time. On display will be an array of maps, from the earliest English rendering of Mercator’s projection, by Edward Wright, to one showing the global spread of Malaria and other tropical diseases, by emoji; from world maps for walls, to globes that will fit in a pocket.
And a few unicorns.
Firsts: London’s Rare Book Fair
Found in the heart of Chelsea, Firsts London is the Antiquarian Book Association’s (ABA’s) annual rare book fair. We are thrilled to be participating once more in this prestigious fair.
This year’s theme is the Art of the Book, bringing together the best of the market of beautiful books. Saatchi Gallery will see over one hundred international book dealers, exhibiting exceptional books as art through illustration and illumination, typography and photography, printing and paper manufacturing, and the art of bookbinding itself.

TEFAF Maastricht
TEFAF Maastricht is widely regarded as the world’s premier fair for fine art, antiques, and design, bringing together 7,000 years of art history under one roof. Featuring over 260 prestigious dealers from some 20 countries, TEFAF Maastricht is a showcase for the finest art works currently on the market. Alongside the traditional areas of Old Master paintings, antiques, and classical antiquities that cover approximately half of the fair, you can also find modern and contemporary art, photography, jewelry, 20th century design, and works on paper.

Venice Antiquarian Book Fair
We look forward to returning to the Venice Antiquarian Book Fair, held at the Palazzo Pisani Revedin.
After the success of last February, antiquarian bookstores associated with ILAB and the Italian Booksellers Association (A.L.A.I. – Associazione Librai Antiquari d’Italia) will once again participate in the exhibition, coming from all over Europe, to offer bibliophiles, enthusiasts and the curious a selection of incunabula, manuscripts, prints, ancient books and twentieth-century rarities.
California Antiquarian Book Fair
We are delighted to return to the California International Antiquarian Book Fair, held in San Francisco. This three-day event features fine and rare materials from around the globe, including manuscripts, first editions, illustrated books, ephemera, maps, and autographs, as well as antiquarian books on a vast array of topics.
The California trade fair is organised by the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America (ABAA) and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB).
The Winter Show 2024
The 70th edition of The Winter Show will be held in the historic Park Avenue Armory where a variety of works spanning 5,000 years will be presented by over 68 internationally renowned dealers. Thousands of works from paintings and works on paper, fine furniture, and design, to jewellry, and contemporary ceramics and glass will be on view. Famed for its rigorous vetting practices carried out by a committee of 120 experts, the Fair’s exhibitors offer works of the highest standards of authenticity and quality in the industry.

London Art Week Winter 2023

We are delighted to be participating for the first time in the Fine Arts Paris & La Biennale fair.
The fair was conceived in 2017 by the organisers of the Salon du Dessin, and is now an unmissable event in the Parisian art market.

Paris Map, Globes & Scientific Instruments Fair
The 21st edition of the Paris Map Fair will be held on Saturday 5 November in Hotel Ambassador, in the heart of Paris, just 2 minutes from the famous Opera Garnier and the major department stores.
The fair is organised by the Librairie Loeb-Larocque and Le Zograscope, and includes antique maps, atlases, globes, scientific instruments and travel books.

London Original Print Fair
We are thrilled to be taking part, for our first time, to the London Original Print Fair, taking place at Somerset House.
The fair provides an unrivalled opportunity to view and buy original prints spanning five centuries, from top international dealers, galleries and studios. LOPF’s convivial atmosphere in the Royal Academy’s Main Galleries provides the perfect setting in which to engage with the 50 exhibitors, who offer a wealth of specialist knowledge for new and experienced collectors alike. Artists include old and modern masters, from Rembrandt and Canaletto to Whistler, Matisse and Picasso. Prints by today’s leading artists are also for sale, including works by celebrated Royal Academician printmakers including David Hockney, Cornelia Parker, Grayson Perry, Christopher Le Brun and Rebecca Salter PRA.

Inaugurated in 1981 by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan,
the Fair has gained a global reputation as a leading literary trade and
cultural event in the region.

The Fair was established in the mid-1950s as a benefit for East Side House Settlement and, by the end of that decade, had firmly established itself as the leading event of its kind in the United States. Over the course of its 68-year history, the Fair has been held at the historic Park Avenue Armory for all but three years.
This year’s show has been postponed from January to April, and it is going to be held at 660 Madison Avenue, the former flagship store of Barneys New York.

California Antiquarian Book Fair
We are looking forward to be taking part in the 54th California Antiquarian International Book Fair, the trade fair organised by the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America (ABAA) and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB).
Among other highlights, the fair will include a major historical exhibit on wine and viticulture, courtesy of the wonderful holdings of the University of California Library at Davis, which have aptly been described as “the greatest wine library in the world”. There will also be additional book-related lectures and displays throughout the weekend.

The Malcolm Young Lecture by Daniel Crouch–Armada Maps
Daniel Crouch will offer a talk titled, “A Protestant Wind or Hot Air? A study of the Astor Armada drawings.”
In January 2021 a set of ten ink and watercolour drawings were acquired by the National Museum of the Royal Navy. The re-discovered manuscripts are the earliest visual representations of the progress of the Spanish Armada and depict one of the greatest events in British naval history.

We are taking part in the California Virtual Book Fair, sponsored by the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America (ABAA) and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB).
The three-day virtual book fair will offer a rich selection of manuscripts, early American and European literature, modern first editions, children’s books, maps and autographs, as well as antiquarian books on history, science, law, architecture, cooking, wine, and a wide range of other topics from the collections of more than 200 booksellers from over 20 countries around the world. community-based organization serving the Bronx and Northern Manhattan.
East Side House’s programs focus on education and technology as gateways
out of poverty and as the keys to economic opportunity.
All revenues from the fair’s general admissions and the net proceeds
from the Opening Night Party and other special events go to East Side
House and contribute substantially to its private philanthropic budget.
No part of sales made by exhibitors is received by East Side House.

‘Rounded with a sleep’: an exhibition commemorating 400 years since the passing of Shakespeare and Cervantes
DCRB, in collaboration with Librería Bardón (Madrid) and Stéphane Clavreuil Rare Books (London), brings together maps of Elizabethan England such as a 1583 wall map of England and Wales by Christopher Saxton, with rare works by the two authors, including a first edition of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and a copy of Cervantes’s Don Quixote illustrated by Dalí.
The date of the authors’ passing – 23 April 1616 – inspired the establishing of World Book and Copyright Day by the UNESCO.

Mapping London at the OXO Tower
As part of the Totally Thames festival, DCRB brings to the Oxo Tower a
fascinating exhibition of maps of London from 1572 to 2013.
Highlights include the first printed plan of London, printed in 1572 by Braun & Hogenberg; Rocque’s grand plan of the city and the country ten miles around in 16 sheets from 1747; Booth’s ‘Poverty map’ depicting the condition and occupation of the people of London in 1889; Beck’s 1933 tube map, the first of its kind; and Simon Patterson’s ‘Saptarishi’ tube map from 2012, which replaces station names with famous personalities of the decade.

Scottish Maps at the Caledonian Club
The British Library and DCRB’s exhibition of rare Scottish maps and pamphlets in the Drawing Room of the Caledonian Club, to coincide with Burns’ Night and to help raise awareness for the British Library’s campaign to raise funds to conserve, catalogue and digitize the King’s Topographical Collection.
