This small, decorative map shows the South coast of India, the Maldives and Sri Lanka. The islands are depicted remarkably accurately, and all of them are named. Two mermaids appear amid waves on the lower border, holding between them a banner identifying it as a map of the Maldives. A line representing the equator runs through the lower part of the map, and the longitude and latitude are expressed in the borders. The text is in French, revealing the map's origins: it is found first in Alain Mannesson Mallet's 'Description de L'Universe', published by the French cartographer in 1683. On this map, a German title and number sit above the image, indicating that it was featured in Johann David Zunner's German edition of the Atlas, first published in 1686. Zunner's edition itself is rare, and we have been unable to trace any other example of this individual map appearing on the market.
