Sir Edmond Halley was one of the first astronomers to apply himself to the study of eclipses. A pioneer of predictive astronomy, Halley is credited with the first truly scientific predictive eclipse map, 'A Description of the Passage of the Shadow of the Moon'. 'A Description' was created for the solar eclipse of 22nd April, 1715, forecasting its passage over England and southern Scotland. ESTC N8535 records four American institutional locations, but the entry describes the second state, with the additional imprint of William Taylor. Shirley, Printed Maps of the British Isles, Senex 1, records two institutional locations, in the Royal Astronomical Society Library and in the Bodleian (Hearne Libraries), this latter the second state; additionally the British Library example, and two examples seen in commerce, were both second states.
