Antique county map of Sussex first published in 1800, and later included in Charles Smith's 'New English Atlas' (1804). The county's villages, towns, and cities, including Chichester, Hastings, Hailsham, and Lewes among the most prominent, are shown along with all the other necessary information for a traveller at the beginning of the nineteenth century, such as turnpike roads with distances from town to town. Above the map a key identifies certain features shown across Sussex, for example rivers, parks, noble seats, churches and chapels. Certain administrative divisions are indicated by colour, and 64 "rapes and hundreds" are listed along the lower edge.

Charles Smith was a cartographer active in London at the turn of the nineteenth century, who issued a large number of county maps, initially published as single sheets for travellers but later published together as an atlas. The individual sheets were typically laid on linen to preserve them during the user's journey. The present edition of his Sussex map was published in 1832.
