The Crystal Palace, as it was christened by 'Punch' magazine, was designed by Sir Joseph Paxton to house the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park in 1851. The brainchild of Prince Albert, the Great Exhibition, was the largest trade show conceived, and yet of all the wonders of the new industrialised world on display, the greatest exhibit was the Palace itself.
