With the success of Operation Pied Piper - the huge evacuation of children and the vulnerable from Britain's cities during the Second World War - coupled with the British state's lack of financial resources meant that evacuation would become a cornerstone of Britain's planning and preparation for a nuclear attack. So wedded to the idea were the British, that it would remain official policy until 1968, some 16 years after the U.S.A. (the Russians were just behind in 1953) detonated the first thermonuclear device, rendering the whole process somewhat obsolete.

The map, based on the Ordnance Survey, was produced by William G. Nutland, whose paste over can be seen on sheet 24, and on the key sheet, and highlights the principal exit roads from Britian's main towns and cities. A key to sheet 24, marks 'A' roads red, 'B' roads green, with other roads uncoloured. Although railways are also shown, this is principally a road map, with both 'A' and 'B' roads referred to as 'Exit Roads', which both bear their designated number in red. The number in green representing the distance between towns and cities. Surrounding the map are 22 city and town plans, which again mark the main roads, and the cities (and their distances) to which the roads lead. The key sheet lists the towns and their corresponding sheet number.

Although the map is not dated - due to the absence of any motorways - it was most likely produced at the beginning of the 1950s, when evacuation plan was at its height.
