Notes

The map was published in Amsterdam in the year of the Great Fire of London, and shows the devastation it wrought. Below the map is an accompanying text in Dutch, French, and English. The text gives a detailed account of the blaze, from its inception in a “Bakers howse in Pudding Lane” (marked with an ‘A’ on the plan), on Sunday morning of the 12th of September, to when it was “wholy extinguished and quenched on Thursday by reason of diverse Howses were blown up by powder, so that the flame was caused to desist”. The fire had led to the complete destruction of all houses from the Tower of London to Temple. The text also lists all the streets that were affected by the fire.
