Notes

The plan is dedicated to Sir Peter Delme, a wealthy merchant who had been knighted in 1714. Delme served as Governor of the Bank of England between 1715-1717 and was made Lord Mayor of London in 1723. His name appears in an elaborate cartouche surrounded by the City’s heraldic dragons, the City’s regalia, together with symbols of trade, art, and justice. Below the plan is a reference table listing, churches, public buildings, parish churches within the walls, parishes part within and part out of the freedom, out parishes, and names of the wards of the City of London.

The plan was published in a ‘A New General Atlas Containing a Geographical and Historical Account of the World’, published in 1721.

Scale: 5 1/2 inches to 1 statute mile.
