Notes

A detailed Spanish chart showing from the edge of southern Cuba south to the coasts of Central America, with the Mosquito coasts of Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. The lighthouses are marked with colour. It appears that the title should read “parte de la ISLA de Cuba”.

Of particular interest is the new Panama Railway, built across the isthmus 1850 to 1855; the Panama Canal followed a parallel route half-a-century later, benefiting from the haulage capabilities of the trains. Not only were millions of tons of men, equipment and supplies hauled, but so was all the surplus rock and soil dug from the canal.
