Notes
A French postcard with a cartoon map of Europe, with each of the countries represented as the head of their leader or by a national personification. Spain appears in a matador's costume; Kaiser Wilhelm in a spiked helmet; the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed V in a distinctive fez. Victor Emmanuel, with characteristic upturned moustache, peeks out of the boot of Italy; the Emperor Franz Joseph boasts some impressive mutton chops in Austria. George V is shown smoking a pipe, a common French stereotype of the English. The huge face of the Tsar looks threateningly toward the three countries of the hostile Triple Alliance; Russia and France had been allies since 1892.
