This year at the International fair, Daniel will exhibit four ink and watercolour wash manuscript maps of the site of Houston before its foundation, dated 1829-30, printed by Jean Louis Berlandiers, an anthropologist, geographer, historian, meteorologist and naturalist. Each map shows a separate section of the Texas coast, from Galveston Bay to the mouth of the Rio Grande, and they are for sale as a group priced at £250,000.
Heading across the Atlantic for the fair that started it all
In 1989, the London-based fair organisers Brian and Anna Haughton first crossed the Atlantic and founded the International Fine Art & Antique Dealers Show at New York’s Part Avenue Armony, now an established calendar fixture on the New York social scene and for many US and European dealers.
The first ‘vetted’ fair to tale place in America, it’s a high-end, largely traditional event and there is an impressive selection of European period furniture, pictures and works or art on show to attract a clientele of moneyed Americans seeking that English country house look.
For the 25th edition, from October 25-31, there are 67 exhibitors, 14 of them British this year, and five will take part for the first time: Enrico Gallerie d’Arte from Milan with 19th century Italian pictures; Galerie Mathivet from Paris with Art Deco decorative arts and furniture; Richard Redding Antiques Ltdfrom Switzerland (clocks, furniture and works of art); Schillay Fine Art Inc of New York with Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Modern art, and PrPh Books LLC of New York, who will share a stand with fellow books dealer Daniel Crouch.
The vintage wallpaper specialist Carolle Thibaut-Pomerantz,based in New York and Paris, and British dealers Finch & Co, with their eclectic mix of ethnography, European works of art, natural history and antiquities, both return to the event this year after a break.
