Large map poster published for the computer game: Zork II: The Wizard of Frobozz.

The Zork computer game was developed by Infocom, an early software developer in Cambridge Massachusettes. First released in 1977, Zork would become the most successful of the early text adventure or interactive fiction games. In the game, the player explores the abandoned Great Underground Empire in search of treasure. The player moves between the game's hundreds of locations and interacts with objects by typing commands in natural language that the game interprets. The program acts as a narrator, describing the player's location and the results of the player's commands.

Zork was released in three parts: Zork I: the Great Underground Empire; Zork II: The Wizard of Frobozz; and Zork III: The Dungeon Master. It would become one of the most successful games of the early 1980s selling of 680,000 copies, and would be hugely influential in the development of the online role-playing games we know today. In 2007, Zork was included in the game canon by the Library of Congress as one of the ten most important video games in history.
