The charts marks soundings, hazards of the sea, and the position of lighthouses (highlighted in red and yellow), with principal ports and rivers marked. The sheet consists of four charts: Bay of St Mark; Goave Bay; Port Paix; and Fond La Grange. To the lower right is a stamp, stating that the chart was updated to 1897.

The U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office was set up in 1866, with the express intention of moving away from the navy's reliance on British Admiralty charts. The first bodies of water surveyed by the new department were the Caribbean, and the Pacific. Unlike the British Admiralty charts, U.S. charts were not licensed for sale to the general public making them considerably rarer.
