Minneapolis Institute of Arts unveiling major buy
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts unveils a major acquisition when it opens a new exhibition on paintings from Venice next Sunday.
‘Titian and the Golden Age of Venetian Painting: Masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland’ will run through May 1.
The museum is using it as a chance to show off a rare map of Venice. Jacopo de Barbari’s ‘View of Venice’, published in 1500, is considered one of the most spectacular achievements of Renaissance printmaking. It gives a mural-sized topographical view of the Italian city, measuring over nine feet wide. It is one of only 13 known copies.
The map had belonged to a French aristocratic family since the mid-18th century. The institute acquired it for an undisclosed seven-figure sum in December.
