Scottish Maps Forum
The Scottish Maps Forum was established by the National Library in January 2002 to develop the interest in early maps of Scotland generated by Project Pont. The forum is led by an invited steering committee of researchers, map users and representatives of institutions with map collections.

Swedish Cartography Society
The Swedish Cartographic Society was founded in 1908, and is probably one of the oldest of its kind. The Society’s goal is to increase the interest in cartography and other topics related to mapping or the use of maps in Sweden and to try to encourage a development in the area.

The Arthur H. Robinson Map Library, University of Wisconsin
The Robinson Map Library maintains a comprehensive collection of general and political maps for all parts of the world, thematic maps, historical and special interest maps, and maps of major cities.The library also has an extensive collection of highway maps for the US and travel maps from around the world. In total, the map collection consists of about 275,000 items.
Australian National Maritime Museum
The National Maritime Collection represents Australians’ diverse experiences and perceptions of the sea and our waterways. One of Australia’s most recent major collections, commenced only in 1986, it already comprises some 38,000 items including 1,048 archive series. There are 52,228 individual archive items.
Bayerische Staatsbibliothek – Bavarian State Library
The Map Collection and Image Archive preserves the comprehensive collection of maps and atlases as well as the image archive of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.The continuously supplemented Collection of Maps comprises printed maps (single-sheet maps and cartographic works consisting of several sheets) from the year of publication 1500 up to today (approximately 390,000 items in 2008), atlases and selected cartographic literature (approximately 12,500 in 2008).

The Map Department has holdings between 1500 and 1939 with about 450,000 items.
Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal – National Library of Portugal
The Cartography collection holds around 6,800 titles composed of both printed and manuscript atlases, maps and plans that have been made and/or published since the 16th century. Although the collection includes cartographic representations of every part of the world, the majority of the items portray Portugal and its former overseas domains.
Bibliothèque nationale de France – National Library of France
Alongside a general collection consisting of printed materials and manuscripts relating to geography, there are various other collections: the Anville collection of 10,500 maps from the 16th to the 18th century, the collection of the Navy Hydrographic Office, and geographers’ papers (le Père de Dainville, Bernard Kayser, Jean Gottmann, etc.).
British Library
The national map library of Great Britain, with a collection of over 4.25 million atlases, maps, globes and books on cartography, dating from the 15th century to the present day. This makes the collection the second largest in the world (after the Library of Congress).
Bodleian Library
The world’s seventh largest collection of maps. Well over one million sheet maps and 20,000 atlases are available to readers. The collections include early examples of cartography, such as the fourteenth century Gough Map, portolan charts, estate maps and many atlases.
Cambridge University Library
The Map Department contains some 1,100,000 maps, both British and foreign, several thousand atlases and other ancillary material.
Carleton University Library
The paper collection is a non-circulating research collection of sheet maps, globes, air photos, microforms, digital atlases and cartographic reference works. As of March 31, 2011 the cartographic collection comprised almost 200,000 items.
Dallas Pratt Collection of Historical Maps, American Museum in Britain
In 1988, Dr Pratt gifted his 200 maps to the museum – one of the greatest Renaissance map collections in Europe. Although many of the maps are printed examples from the 16th century, the collection also includes significant manuscript drawings from as early as the 12th century.
Eidgenossiche Technische Hochschule Zurich – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich
The Map Collection comprises about 400,000 scientific, technical and topographical maps as well as atlases dating from the 19th to the 21st century, including individual maps, map books, maps from cantonal surveys, street maps, panoramic maps and satellite photographs. There are also rare and valuable prints of maps from the 18th and 19th centuries and approximately 4,000 atlases and books, over 400 CD-ROMs, a range of digital maps, GIS and spatial data, along with up-to-date and historic aerial photos of Switzerland.
Eton College Library
College Library is a rare book and manuscript library of international importance. Established soon after the foundation of the college in 1440, it houses more than 150,000 items, ranging in date from the 10th to 21st centuries. These include printed and manuscript volumes, literary manuscripts, autograph letters, and prints and drawings.
Foyle Special Collections Library, King’s College London
The Foyle Special Collections Library houses some 170,000 printed works, as well as maps, slides, sound recordings and manuscript material.
Gennadius Library, The American School of Classical Studies at Athens
Opened in 1926 with 26,000 volumes from diplomat and bibliophile, Joannes Gennadius, the Gennadius Library now holds a richly diverse collection of over 120,000 books and rare bindings, archives, manuscripts, and works of art illuminating the Hellenic tradition and neighboring cultures.
The Globe Museum, Austrian National Library
The holdings of the Globe Museum consist at the moment of about 650 objects: terrestrial and celestial globes, lunar and planet globes, and instruments related to globes (armillary spheres, planetaria, telluria). The Map Department administers about 290,000 maps, 45,000 geographic-topographic views, 800.000 picture postcards, 650 globes, 100 reliefs and models of fortresses, and about 81,000 volumes of technical literature and atlases.
Glucksman Map Library, Trinity College
The library holds over half a million maps and atlases making it the largest collection of printed maps in Ireland.
Niedersachsische Staats- und Universitatsbibliothek Gottingen – Gottingen State and University Library
The Map Collection comprises around 300,000 map sheets, 9,000 atlases, 20,000 explanations, topographical maps of around 120 states in various scales, 65,000 old maps, and a reference section with the most important literature on cartography.
Hargrett Library Rare Map Collection, University of Georgia
The Hargrett Rare Book & Manuscript Library at the University of Georgia Libraries maintains a collection of more than 1,000 historic maps spanning nearly 500 years, from the sixteenth century through the early twentieth century.
Harvard College Library
Since its inception almost two centuries ago, the Harvard Map Collection has grown to encompass 400,000 maps, 6,000 atlases, and 5,000 reference books.
HistoryMiami Museum
The picture archives contains 1.1 million images of southeast Florida, the entire state and the Caribbean. Holdings include photographs, maps, prints, postcards, illustrated books and stereographs.
Hong Kong Maritime Museum
While the Museum concentrates on the South China coast and its adjacent seas, it also covers global trends and provides a comprehensive account of Hong Kong’s growth and development as a major world port and top maritime centre.
Honnold Library, Claremont Colleges
The collection includes approximately 2 million volumes, access to articles in more than 60,000 periodicals, more than 30,000 reels of microfilm, and over 1 million microfiche and microcards. Its collection of maps focuses on Western Americana.
James Ford Bell Library, University of Minnesota
The collection consists of more than 25,000 items in the form of books, maps, manuscripts, pamphlets, broadsides, and assorted printed documents. It ranges in scope from invoices for rope, ships’ logs, and gilt-edged trade treaties between Western and Eastern monarchs to diaries, travel narratives, and missionary accounts.
John Carter Brown Library, Brown University
Most well-known, perhaps, are the Library’s extensive holdings in the literature of European exploration and travel in the Western Hemisphere, from the first Latin edition of the Columbus letter of 1493, through nearly all of the contemporary narratives of Spanish, Portuguese, French, Dutch, and English discovery, exploration, and settlement.
John Rylands Library, University of Manchester
The collection offers an extensive range of topographic and thematic mapping for the UK, with a strong emphasis on the North West, as well as wide-ranging coverage for the rest of the World.
KBR – Royal Library of Belgium
The Maps Collection maintains a collection estimated at approximately 150,000 works, including maps and plans as a collection or single sheets, atlases, globes and monographs relating to Belgium and worldwide.
The Lapworth Library, University of Birmingham
The Lapworth Museum has a fine collection of early geological maps published by many of the most important, and distinguished, geologists of the nineteenth century.
Library and Archives Canada
Since its inception in 1872, the National Archives of Canada has acquired, preserved and commemorated the cartographic heritage of Canada and there are now some two million items in the collection.
Library of Congress
The Geography and Map Division (G&M) has custody of the largest and most comprehensive cartographic collection in the world with collections numbering over 5.5 million maps, 80,000 atlases, 6,000 reference works, over 500 globes and globe gores, 3,000 raised relief models, and a large number of cartographic materials in other formats, including over 19,000 CDs/DVDs.
Library of Virginia
The Map Collection contains more than 60,000 items and includes general historical maps (manuscript, printed, and photocopies of Virginia maps from other collections), special groups of historical maps, United States Geological Survey (U.S.G.S.) topographic quadrangles, drawings, and plans.
Linda Hall Library
The Linda Hall Library is the world’s foremost independent research library devoted to science, engineering and technology. Past exhibitions have included ‘The Golden Age of the Celestial Atlas’ and ‘Voyages: Scientific Circumnavigations’.
Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division, New York Public Library
The Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division is one of the world’s premier map collections in terms of size, scope, unique holdings, diversity and intensity of use. Established in 1898, our holdings include more than 433,000 sheet maps and 20,000 books and atlases published between the 15th and 21st centuries.
London Metropolitan Archives
We have extensive holdings of printed maps of London from the sixteenth century, thematic maps including bomb damage, plans and drawings in the Building Act case file series and other collections, and over 250,000 prints, watercolours, etchings and photographs showing the changing face of London over the last 300 years.
Los Angeles Public Library
The Map Collection of the Los Angeles Public Library’s Central Library is one of the largest in American public libraries. In this collection are 85,000 maps, some 2,000 atlases, over 1,000 gazetteers, some 20 serial titles and over one thousand books supporting the study of maps and mapping. The emphasis of this collection is on Los Angeles, Southern California and California but in many cases the scope extends to national and international coverage.
Map & Atlas Museum of La Jolla
The La Jolla Map and Atlas Museum features maps that span 500 years, from the 15th century all the way to the mid-20th century. The maps are from all over the world, but most of the collection can be traced back to European roots.
The Mariners Museum
The Museum’s collection contains approximately 35,000 two and three-dimensional objects and images documenting nearly 3,000 years of humankind’s experiences on the seas and waterways of the world.
Maritiem Museum Rotterdam
The museum was founded by HRH Prince Hendrik (1820-1879), also known as Hendrik the Seafarer, who named the institute, providing the first items for the collection in 1852.The Rotterdam Maritime Museum is the oldest shipping museum in the Netherlands.
Minneapolis Institute of Art
The MIA’s permanent collection has grown from eight hundred works of art to around eighty thousand objects. The collection includes world-famous works that embody the highest levels of artistic achievement, spanning five thousand years and representing the world’s diverse cultures across all continents.
Morgan Library
Located in midtown Manhattan, the Morgan houses one of the world’s greatest collections of artistic, literary, and musical works, from ancient times to the medieval and Renaissance periods to the present day.
National Library of Australia
Our Maps collection includes over 600,000 maps, from early European charts to current mapping of Australia, in print and digital form.
Det Kongelige Bibliotek – The National Library of Denmark
The Department of Maps, Prints and Photographs was established in 1902. Today the department has approximately 16 million items, mostly photographs, but also 275.000 maps, 7.500 atlases and 32 globes. The department collects Danish as well as foreign materials, but primarily Danish maps, atlases and globes.
National Library of Scotland
With around two million cartographic items, our map collection is the largest in Scotland and one of the biggest in the world. Our holdings cover all parts of the globe, through some 700 years, from medieval manuscript maps to current digital mapping.
Biblioteca Nacional de España – National Library of Spain
The core of the cartographic collection is made up of the archives once held by the Royal Library, which consisted of the archives that King Philip V of Spain brought from France along with others incorporated into the library via other means to create collections or atlases.
National Maritime Museum London
The Museum has the most important holdings in the world on the history of Britain at sea comprising more than two million items, including maritime art (both British and 17th-century Dutch), cartography, manuscripts including official public records, ship models and plans, scientific and navigational instruments, instruments for time-keeping and astronomy (based at the Observatory).
Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum – The Netherlands Maritime Museum
Het Scheepvaartmuseum has the second-largest maritime collection in the world. The library of Het Scheepvaartmuseum holds one of the most renowned maritime collections in the world. The oldest object in the 60,000-book collection is an atlas dating from 1482.
Newberry Library
The Newberry houses an extraordinary collection of maps and sources relating to the history and culture of travel. The geographical coverage of the map collection is best for the Americas and Western Europe, but all regions of the world are well represented. About half of the library’s 500,000 maps (including those found in books) were published before 1900.
New York Historical Society
The map collection ranges from the 17th century to the present and includes both printed and manuscript items. Geographic scope varies by time period, but extends from New York to the entire country.
Northwestern University Library
The Maps Collection is composed of over 200,000 maps. Our collection also includes numerous atlases, gazetteers, other reference materials, and digital mapping products. The scope of the collection is worldwide but its holdings are primarily U.S. Federal Government products.
Norman B. Leventhal Map Center, Boston Public Library
The Norman B. Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library is the steward of the Boston Public Library’s map collection, of over 200,000 historic and contemporary maps and 5,000 atlases.
Osher Map Library, University of Southern Maine
The cartographic collections contain original maps, atlases, globes, books, and scientific instruments, dating from 1475 to the present. They emphasize first Maine and New England, then the USA, the Americas, and the world.
Otto G. Richter Library, University of Miami
The Map Collection includes approximate 5,000 maps with a focus on Florida and the Caribbean.
Perry-Castañeda Library, University of Texas
The Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection is a general collection of more than 250,000 maps covering all areas of the world.
Princeton University Library
This non-circulating collection is geographically comprehensive and contains extensive holdings of contemporary physical, political and thematic print maps and cartographic materials issued by local, federal, and commercial agencies, foreign governments, and international organizations.
Phillips Library, Peabody Essex Museum
The library provides researchers, curators, and the general public access to 400,000 printed volumes, over a mile in linear feet of manuscripts, and an extensive collection of ephemera, broadsides, pamphlets, and a substantial run of periodicals.
Rare Books Research Library, The Getty
The Getty Research Institute library collections include over one million books, periodicals, study photographs, and auction catalogs as well as extensive special collections of rare and unique materials. Focusing on art history, architecture, and related fields, they begin with the archaeology of prehistory and extend to the contemporary moment.
The Roger Baskes Collection
Since 1985, Roger Baskes has collected atlases, travel guides and other books with maps. Together with geography books and related reference materials, the collection comprises over 15,000 books, containing over 500,000 maps.
Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen – Royal Tropical Institute
One of the largest collections of maps of the former Dutch colonies.
Rumsey Map Collection
The historical map collection has over 28,000 maps and images online. The collection focuses on rare 18th and 19th century North American and South American maps and other cartographic materials. Historic maps of the World, Europe, Asia, and Africa are also represented.
Russian State Library
The collection of cartographic publications is one of the world’s largest and one of three available in Russia. This specialized collection includes atlases, maps, plans, schematic maps and globes and provides a wealth of material on topics of this kind, publications and different types of presentation of cartographic information. Its volume is about 250 thousand copies.
Ryhiner Map Collection, Universitatsbibliothek Bern – University Library Berne
The Ryhiner map collection is one of the most valuable and outstanding collections of the world. It consists of more than 16,000 maps, charts, plans and views from the 16th to the 18th century, covering the whole globe.
Stanford University Library
Special Collections and University Archives contains approximately 270,000 map sheets, including notably the Antiquarian Map collection and the Dr. Oscar I. Norwich Collection of the Maps of Africa and its Islands.
St. John’s College Library, Cambridge University
From the late sixteenth century onwards St John’s has maintained one of the larger College libraries in Cambridge, This now houses some 50,000 early printed books, and amongst these are some of the key milestones in printing history, many of the major texts of the early modern period, and numerous volumes with exceptional bindings and decoration.
Universiteitsbibliotheek van Amsterdam – University of Amsterdam Library
The cartographic collection, with holdings dating from the 15th century until the present day, comprises map-sheets (approximately 25,000 pre-1800), atlases (also on Cd-rom) and globes. The Map Room also holds the maps and a portion of the atlases of the Library and map collection of the Royal Dutch Geographical Society, which have been incorporated on loan into the Amsterdam University Library since 1880.
University of California, Berkeley Library
The Earth Sciences & Map Library has the largest collection of maps in northern California and one of the largest university map collections in the United States. There are over 450,000 maps and aerial photographs in its collection, issued by local, federal, and commercial agencies, foreign governments, and international organizations.
Universiteitsbibliotheek Leiden – University of Leiden Library
The collection of maps and atlases consists of approximately 60,000 maps, 1,500 atlases and 25,000 topographical prints and drawings.
University of Melbourne
The Map Collection includes approximately 15,000 rare historic maps of countries and regions from around the world, the majority representing Australia. This includes some of the earliest cartographic works by explorers of Australasia and the pacific.
University of North Carolina
The Maps Collection houses about 250,000 maps and charts covering the world and parts of our solar system. It also contains atlases, gazetteers, cartographic reference volumes, and government depository publications.
University of South Carolina
The core of the Map Library collection consists of approximately 250,000 maps, 130,000 aerial photographs and 4,000 atlases and books.
Universiteitsbibliotheek Utrecht – University of Utrecht Library
Nowadays, the collection includes 170,000 single maps and 6,000 atlases. The collection of old cartographic material contains approximately 6,000 maps produced before 1850, including some rare old maps.
The Vatican Library
The Vatican Library is one of the oldest libraries in the world and contains one of the most significant collections of historical texts. Formally established in 1475, though in fact much older, it has 75,000 codices from throughout history.
William L. Clements Library, University of Michigan
The map collection has been assembled to document the expansion of geographical knowledge of the Americas from the 15th through the 19th centuries, with particular strengths in North American military history, frontier expansion, and the history of cartography itself. Among the 600 atlases and roughly 30,000 maps in the collection is virtually every printed map relating to the United States before 1820, either in original copy or facsimile.
William C. Wonders Map Collection, University of Alberta
The William C. Wonders Map Collection is one of the largest collections of cartographic materials in Canada. It includes maps, atlases, globes, aerial photographs and other cartographic materials. While the emphasis of the collection is North American, it contains maps for all parts of the world and has strengths in the following areas: Western Canada, Northern Canada, Poland, Germany, France, and archival collections for Ukraine, British Isles, and Eastern Europe.
Yale University Library
The Yale Map Collection has the largest collection of maps in Connecticut and one of the largest university collections in the United States. Its collections are geographically comprehensive and consist of over 200,000 map sheets, 3,000 atlases, and 900 reference books.
Zentralbibliothek Zurich – Zurich Central Library
The Maps Department of the Zurich Central Library serves as a centre of excellence for new and old topographic maps of good quality.
