Notes

Rare fan map of Bath.

To the right and left of the plan are vignette views of 'The Circus' and 'Bank in Milsom Street', together with two keys to the plan - one numerical (1-42) and alphabetical (a-u). The alphabetical key listing inns, yards and courts, with with the numerical listing religious houses, banks, baths, monuments, and other public buildings.

John Cock (fl.1782-1801) and J P Crowder, were print publishers and fan makers working in London at the end of the eighteenth century. Cock and Crowder went into partnership at some point in the early 1790s, working out of Cock's premisses. No. 21 Wood Street, in Cheapside.

The Schreiber Collection contains five fans by Cock and Crowder ranging in date from 1793 to 1800, although not the present example. It would appear that fan maps are particularly uncommon with the collection containing only five fans that depict maps or plans.
