笔记

A detailed map of the Arabian Peninsula, which includes an early reference to Katara, the modern state of Qatar. The map is centred on the Red Sea, shows Straits of Ormuz, Al Katif, I. Bahrayn (Bahrain), Katara (Qatar), and the "Perl Bank". Julfar is named (Ras Al Khaimah), but curiously misplaced to the south. While Katara or Catara had appeared on Ptolemaic maps dating the the fifteenth century and before, the name was typically associated with the ancient usage of Ptolemy. Here, it appears on a modern map which is no longer intended to show ancient place-names.

From a Dutch edition of the Abbé Prévost's travel book, the 'Histoire Generale des Voyages'. Prévost's work was an expansion of Thomas Astley's 'Voyages and Travels' compiled by Astley from sources including John Atkins, Theodor de Bry and Jean-Baptiste Lavat. The first seven volumes of Astley's work were translated into French by the Abbé Antoine François Prévost (1697-1763). The maps for the 'Histoire' were produced by Jacques Nicolas Bellin. They were re-engraved by Jacob van der Schley for the Dutch editions of the work.

Van der Schley (1715-1779), was apprenticed to Bernard Picart (1673-1733) between 1727 and 1733; he worked in Amsterdam, mainly for the book trade, together with his brother Philippe.
