Pen and ink with polychrome wash, text in Anglo-Norman French, nine parchment membranes glued end to end. The first eight of these membranes were assembled and executed between 1321-7. A ninth membrane was added to the roll during the reign of Henry IV, between 1399-1413, which continues the genealogy from Edward III to Henry IV’s children. Modern repairs have patched the parchment where it has been damaged by the corrosive action of the verdigris green pigment used liberally in the genealogy. The surface of the parchment is rubbed, testimony to the wear and tear of repeated unfurling and re-rolling of the manuscript over seven centuries.
