Notes

An advertising fan for the Moulin Rouge during the Mistinguett years.

With premises at Number 1, Rue Oberkampf, J. Ganné offered lithographic 'éventails pour publicité', that is, fans on which businesses could print adverts for their wares or services. One of the firm's trade-card, which states that samples could be provided by return mail ("Échantillons par retour du courrier"). One on side, there is a seating plan of 37 tables surrounding the stage hemispherically, and text stating that dinner could be booked for the price of six francs (wine not included!) by contacting the box office directly via telephone. The five-digit telephone number given also corresponds with a date of around 1925. During the 1920s, the Moulin Rouge experienced a post-war revival, and the period is often known as the Mistinguett years, after the eponymous singer and actress who was at that time the highest-paid female entertainer in the world, her legs being insured for half a million francs.

On the other side of the fan is an illustration of the cabaret itself. The stage and seated audience in the background at the centre of the map, while on both the left and the right are foreground scenes, showing a small party of well-dressed attendees enjoying a meal while watching the show, and the surprisingly empty bar manned by a lone barmaid. The tall figure of a lady looms over her seated husband, at whom she scowling whilst he gazes enraptured at the woman sitting beside him.

J. Ganné appears to have produced such marketing material for a number of other hospitality and entertainment venues, including the Grand Casino at the Salon de Trouville and the Hotel Metropole Bordeaux. His fan for the Moulin Rouge is particularly rare; we have not been able to find another example.
